Organisational review for business owners
Create a business structure that supports where you’re going
As your business grows, the way work is divided doesn’t always grow with it. You may find yourself wearing too many hats, your team may be unclear about who is responsible for what, or, important tasks and decisions may continue to fall back to you.
An Organisational Review gives you dedicated time to step back and look at how your business is structured, not just where you are today, but where you want to go next. Working with an ilumin adviser, you’ll identify the key functions your business needs, clarify roles and responsibilities and develop a functional Organisation Chart that supports a more sustainable, scalable and less owner-dependent business.
The result is greater clarity about who should be doing what, where responsibilities sit and what may need to change as your business evolves.
Business functions
We’ll start with what your business needs, rather than simply looking at the people you currently have.
Together, we’ll identify the key functions required for your business to operate effectively and support your future plans.
Roles and responsibilities
Clear responsibilities help everyone understand what they’re accountable for and where different decisions should sit.
We’ll help you identify gaps, overlaps and areas where roles or responsibilities need to be more clearly defined.
Reducing reliance on the owner
If too much continues to sit with you, it can be difficult to find time for the strategic and higher-value work that moves the business forward.
We’ll help identify responsibilities that could potentially be delegated, developed within your team or outsourced, reducing the need for everything to come back to you.
Team structure
The structure that works for your business today may not be the one you need tomorrow.
We’ll consider your plans for growth and change and help you think about the roles and capabilities your business may need as it develops.
Organisation Chart
We’ll help you develop a functional Organisation Chart that clearly sets out the key functions, roles and responsibilities within your business.
This gives you a practical framework for your current team as well as a structure you can continue to develop as the business changes.

Who is an organisational review for?
An Organisational Review can be valuable whenever the structure of your business is no longer keeping pace with what you need from it.
It can be particularly valuable if you:
Feel like you’re wearing too many hats and too much continues to depend on you.
Have a growing team and need greater clarity around who is responsible for what.
Have unclear, or overlapping, roles that are creating confusion or inefficiency.
Want to make better use of your existing team before deciding whether you need more people.
Are preparing for growth and want a structure that can support the next stage of your business.
Want to step back from some day-to-day responsibilities and spend more time on higher-value activities.
Are preparing for succession or an eventual sale and want to reduce the business’s dependence on you.

What you will walk away with
An Organisational Review is designed to give you a clearer picture of how your business should be structured and what needs to happen next.
You’ll come away with:

What needs to happen for the business to operate effectively.

How does an organisational review work?
Your Organisational Review can take place over one full day or two half-day sessions.
During the review, we’ll work through the key principles of organisational structure, identify the functions your business needs and use our structured process and Organisation Chart template to begin developing the right structure for your business.
Following the session, you’ll prepare your draft Organisation Chart and send it to us for review. We’ll then work through our recommendations with you to help finalise it.
When to have an organisational review
You don’t need to wait until your business structure becomes a problem.
If responsibilities are already unclear, you’re feeling overstretched or your team is growing, reviewing the structure now can help you address those issues before they become more difficult to manage.
It can also be particularly valuable when you’re preparing for growth, restructuring your team or thinking about succession. Looking ahead gives you the opportunity to build the structure around where the business is going, rather than continually adapting it after the fact.

Build a structure that supports what comes next
A clearer structure can help your business make better use of your team, reduce reliance on you and create a stronger foundation for growth and change.
